Dean's Death

The death of our sweet boy.

  • This morning I got to work with 2 missed messages on my phone.
  • I tried to find the email that has the dial in number to get to my messages when Helen called and told me that Dean had died.
  • I left the office immediately, had my flat tire fixed and drove straight home to Rainfern.
  • It was very difficult to drive sometimes because of the emotional fight I was having with myself.
  • Dean must have died some time between Tue. night and Wed. morning around the midnight hour according Helen and Karl.
  • Helen and Karl said that James Cazanas had brought Dean home at about 2:00 PM (1400) on the day of the 27th May and carried Dean into the Game room and put him on the futon. James had called earlier wanting to know what to do with Dean. Dean's Mom requested that James bring Dean home. James had queried Dean's Mom about if Dean should be taken to a Doctor or a hospital. Dean was not conscious at anytime during or after his arrival at the house. This is completely inconsistent with the previous times when Dean has come home after a drug binge.
  • Dean never woke up again that day. Helen said that both Karl and Melissa kept tabs on him throughout the evening but they did not notice anything unusual.
  • Helen got home from work about midnight and she checked on him and immediately called 911. Helen followed the instructions from the 911 connection and apparently the EMS was very quick to the scene.
  • Dean was pronounced dead here at home on the sofa in the Game room.
  • The rest of the day has not been easy. Both Helen and I have been on the phone most of the day for different reasons: funeral arrangements and finances.
  • Thankfully, we have Karl who is a very fine young man and is smart and reasonable and really not susceptible to the weaknesses that afflict so many young people: drugs, alcohol and activities tantamount to a poor character.
  • Helen is going to Klein tomorrow for the funeral arrangements.
  • I will take Karl to school tomorrow and pick him up in the evening.
  • The really dark side to Dean's passing is my contempt for drugs, drug users and drug dealers has reached a dangerous new level.

FAFDS Work Journal

The New Gig in Austin

  • I have spent my first week in Austin at First American Flood Data Services
  • Politically everything bubbled to the top when on the last day @ Flood Data I spoke with Joe Wang. Joe was evidently very unhappy with the FirstAm folks. In particular: Amy and Cliff. Amy amitted as much the day Joe left that she was not happy with Joe's contribution to Insmap but I suspect there was mutual discord between the two.
  • I suspected as much as alluded to in the previous bullet that Amy was fairly bullet proof at FAFDS.
  • The positive side to it all is: I got Insmap built using the big bad build.xml used by CruiseControl. The next item on the agenda when I get back to Austin is to get CruiseControl to build incrementally just the parts that get changed (this may be a challenge). This bullet is ultimately the beginning of my undoing at FAFDS.
  • The first week spent in Austin was in the Intown Suites on Lamar. Now, I have moved into the Barrington apartments on Duval across Mo-Pac from FAFSD.
