Helen home one week
Palliative care and eating
- Helen has been home one week now and has improved over the two previous home stays after being discharged from the hospital.
- The past two days she has been eating and keeping it down.
- The food she has the best luck with is a home-made smoothie. I found an on-line recipe for the standard strawberry/banana smoothie. I am putting two tablespoons of Protein Powder in with the smoothie to help boost the nutritional value of just frozen strawberries and bananas.
Helen back home from Memorial
2nd post ER stay in the hospital
- I drove Helen home from Shenandoah on Fri. 5.
- She was somewhat sedated and slept most of the way home until we got to the pharmacy in Deckar Prarie.
- The drugs are very potent and so took about an hour so I drove Helen home and returned to the pharmacy to get her medications.
- The palliative nurse came yesterday Sat. 6. The nurse had a laptop with her and asked Helen a lot of questions as part of the assessment for palliative care. The palliative nurse is slated for today or tomorrow Mon. 8.
- Helen has not held down food any better since her last return home from the hospital. The only thing she has eaten so far that stays down is a strawberry smoothie I made for her yesterday. Helen has not eaten on any type of regularity without vomiting since before Thanksgiving 09.
Helen in the hospital
- I have visited Helen the past 2 nights. Though she seemed somewhat better she threw-up again tonight.
- Helen has not kept any food down since Thanksgiving.
- And, now when I got back home from the hospital tonight we got a letter from the insurance company that a bill will not be paid as the coverage has run out before the surgery was performed.
- The scary thing was last night she showed me a brochure from the doctor describing the details of palliative care (as opposed to curative care).
